Educator & Volunteer Coordinator

Reports to: Public Programs Manager

Details:  Full time, year-round role. The schedule includes one weekend day per week (Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday). Must be okay working occasional evenings and adjusting schedule to accommodate business needs.

Description: ECHO inspires and engages families in the joy of scientific discovery, wonder of nature, and care of Lake Champlain. ECHO is a dynamic, nationally acclaimed, science center committed to engaging diverse public audiences and providing experiential, relevant and lifelong educational experiences for all our guests. Our educators are dynamic, enthusiastic, and creative people who love to engage with museum guests of all ages. With 70% of their time spent developing new activities; facilitating on the floor; and mentoring volunteers and interns, the remaining 30% is spent growing an enriching and appreciative volunteer program across the organization. The successful candidate is people-oriented, creative, and enthusiastic about informal science education.  

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and deliver engaging STEM activities and presentations for family audiences and guests of all ages.
  • Build and maintain a positive, collaborative relationship with colleagues in the education department and ECHO employees more broadly.
  • Recruit and onboard new and returning volunteers.
  • Create systems to engage and appreciate volunteers, building a meaningful volunteer experience.
  • Maintain ECHO’s volunteer management software and data.
  • Develop and deliver training to volunteers and interns.
  • Mentor interns and volunteers.
  • Help plan and deliver public festivals and special event days.
  • Help manage public program materials and resupply of exhibit consumables.
  • Assist in daily floor closure and clean-up.
  • Substitute as floor manager, providing oversight of a cross-departmental day guest experience team and related operations.
  • Represent ECHO in radio and television media.
  • Other duties and special projects assigned as needed.

Essential Skills:

  • Associate’s Degree in education and/or STEM field. 
  • 3+ years experience building and delivering memorable science learning experiences.
  • Experience working with people of all ages.
  • Comfort and enthusiasm for working with people.
  • Excitement about creating joyful learning experiences.
  • Comfort with failure as a tool for development and learning.
  • Familiarity with the scientific and engineering design processes.
  • Comfort engaging with a range of scientific disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of educational theory and practice, especially in informal science education.
  • Experience in program development and evaluation.
  • Fluent in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office.
  • Familiarity with AV technology.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team setting.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Ability to build relationships with colleagues, including school internship coordinators.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Strong interpersonal, written/verbal communication, and networking skills. 
  • Commitment to ongoing cultural responsiveness.

School Programs Coordinator

Reports to: Group Programs Manager

Details:  Salaried, year-round, full time role. Position starts August 12, 2024.

ECHO is a dynamic, nationally acclaimed science center and lake aquarium committed to engaging diverse public audiences and providing experiential, relevant and lifelong educational experiences for all our guests. The Schools Programs Coordinator is a STEM education specialist and key agent in cultivating the museum’s school programs and relationships. This position works closely with the Group Programs Manager to develop, deliver, and evaluate the museum’s STEM programs for classrooms and teachers, including our on-site, off-site, and virtual classroom programs; STEM curriculum kit lending library; and year-long teacher institute. The ideal candidate will have significant experience developing standard-aligned STEM programs, demonstrate excellent relationship-building skills, have the capacity to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders, be able to inspire student and adult learners alike, and be experienced working with K – 6th grades with the ability to work flexibly with lower and older age groups.

Responsibilities include:  

Teacher Professional Development

  • Develop and deliver STEM professional development training to elementary and middle school teachers.
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group curriculum coaching to partnering teachers. 
  • Assist in the recruitment of partner teachers and classrooms from across Vermont.
  • Support teachers PreK – College in integrating the museum and its exhibits into their curriculum.

Program Development

  • Develop in-person and virtual classroom programs for K – 8th grade learners.
  • Develop standard-aligned STEM lesson plans for K – 8th grade learners.
  • Assist in the development of STEM Classroom Material Kits.
  • Develop surveys and other tools for evaluating program impact.

Program Delivery

  • Deliver dynamic and interactive in-person and virtual STEM programs to elementary and middle school classrooms at the museum and in school settings.
  • Greet and orient school groups and support their museum visits.

Administration

  • Manage tracking and reporting for relevant grants.
  • Lead the coordination of school group visits to the museum.
  • Cultivate relationships with teachers and school administrators.

Other Duties As Assigned

  • Facilitate STEM activities for day visitors on the museum floor.
  • Represent ECHO in radio and television media.
  • Fill in for regular camp staff as needed.

Essential Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in education.
  • 3+ years experience building and delivering memorable STEM learning experiences.
  • Valid driver’s license. 
  • Comfortable delivering programs and workshops to large audiences.
  • Networking experience with ability to build and manage new external partnerships. 
  • Knowledgeable about educational theory and practice.
  • Strong knowledge of Vermont’s science education standards.
  • Strong knowledge of childhood development.
  • Fluent in Google Apps.
  • Experience in curriculum development, assessment, and program evaluation.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic team setting.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to drive multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Committed to ongoing cultural responsiveness.
  • Ability to use AV technology to deliver educational programming.

Toy Store Manager (Temporary)

Reports to: Director of Sales & Guest Services

Details:  Full-time; regular schedule will include one weekend day.

Description: Located at 210 College Street, The Tinkering Turtle is Burlington’s premiere location for high quality educational and fun toys, games, and activities. In partnership with Vermont Teddy Bear, ECHO has expanded their popular gift shop to Burlington’s core. This role is currently temporary (now thru end of 2024) with the potential to become permanent. Although temporary, this role includes access to ECHO’s full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 403(b), and paid time off.

Responsibilities Include:  

  • Prepare the store for daily opening: open register, ensure product is stocked, and morning cleaning tasks are complete
  • Greet each customer and provide excellent customer service
  • Restock product as needed throughout the day
  • Assist guests with Design Studio bears, including sewing bears closed
  • Process transactions accurately and demonstrate proper cash handling
  • Clean and tidy as needed including dusting, vacuuming, washing windows, and removing trash
  • Answer questions in person or via phone
  • Prepare birthday party room with supplies, greet guests, assist with activities, help clean up
  • Sell ECHO memberships; answer questions about the museum and benefits of membership
  • Make recommendations and upsell appropriately
  • Perform closing duties as assigned
  • Assist with web orders, including processing, packing, and shipping as requested
  • Wrap packages, when gift wrap is offered
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Skills:

  • Minimum 2 years of customer service experience
  • Retail and cash handling experience
  • Knowledge of and interest in ECHO’s mission and working with children
  • Currently enrolled in high school or HS Diploma/GED required
  • Ability to operate a cash register and learn ticketing system
  • Physical dexterity and ability to learn to sew bears closed using needle and thread
  • Attention to detail, facility with numbers
  • Ability to work collaboratively with changing coworker team and variety of customers
  • Light cleaning (dusting, vacuuming, taking out trash, washing windows)

Toy Store Sales Associate

Reports to: Store Manager

Details: Hourly, part-time role. Flexible part-time schedule, 12 – 20 hours per week. Weekends, evenings, and holidays are required. This role begins mid-May 2024.
